Conflict in The Odyssey Essay - 998 Words

The epic of The Odyssey by Homer is the second oldest surviving Greek text. The story contains many conflicts such as man v god, man v himself, and man v society. This paper will explore some of the important conflicts in this classic tale. Man v god is the most important conflict in the story. Towards the beginning of the story Odysseus goes to war against the Trojans and wins. What he doesn’t know is that the great God Poseidon favored Odysseus and his army and helped them win the Trojan War. Poseidon becomes very angry with Odysseus’s choice in not thanking him and causes a great deal of troubles for Odysseus and his men at sea. Although Calypso loves him and offers him such a marvelous gift, the gift of immo rtality, it challenges Odysseus true being. While the gift of immortality grants Odysseus with a life of no death he is tempted. He questions what he should do; he begins to see things with his heart and not with his head. He still knows he loves Penelope and she loves him but his thoughts of her being already remarried have worried Odysseus. Odysseus turns down the offer of immortality and decides to build a ship and return home to his wife. A second example of man v himself conflict is Penelope v faithfulness. While Odysseus is at sea for twenty years the suitors go to his home and demand that Penelope remarry because they tell her that Odysseus is dead. Because Penelope is true to her heart and feels that Odysseus will one day return she decides to weave a shroud that resembles a ship to give to Odysseus time to return home. When Odysseus finally returns home he kills all the suitors and finds out that he wasn’t the only one who stayed faithful but his wife Penelo pe also. Another type of conflict that pertains to The Odyssey is man v society. Berger accentuates that we take the â€Å"reality of everyday life for granted as reality. I felt in the way that he was criticizing humans for being ignorant and close minded to what more the world can offer and only focusing on the views of our individual society. Human only seek to understand our individual knowledge of a subject, hence that I mentioned before in my interpretations, that our society is constructed by knowledge. I then concl uded that Berger was arguing on the concept that we, as humans, are de-humanizing ourselves through our view of society. He gives off an example, which I completely agree with, to further emphasize on how humans can become oblivious to the world that is outside OUR individual world. He speaks of a case, where an automobile mechanic who knows of only American cars is put in a situation where a customer brings in a Volkswagen-a foreign-made car. Now this mechanic is required to enter the â€Å"problematic† world of foreign cars with curiosity to lead, or makes the choice to not leave his â€Å"everyday reality. † We, as humans (depending on the individual’s personality) become cautious when the problematic world is presented to us. Whether the society involves humans to be risk taker, no human would leave their world of comfort and sanity to join and explore something completely different from the world they are familiarizing with. After hours of re-reading this excerpt, I finally got an idea or at least a gist of what Bergen and Luckmann argues. I then related their argument to past historical events or events that we deal and struggle with today. I related this excerpt to the struggle that women endured in the mid 1800’s. Many, more in general, men, didn’t recognize women were human with rights according to the governmental documentations. Men saw women as property, especially if they were married. Women were stripped off their rights when married and were considered delicate and weak. Women possess the knowledge that they were equal to men; they knew that the society there were stuck in was incorrect. So they, as â€Å"delicate and weak† beings took the chance to explore their own â€Å"problematic† world. And that lead to a movement, a strong revolution consisting of women fighting for their rights. And the ignorance in this situation is presented through the share of the men’s interpretation of what a woman is and the purpose they are to be serving in society. As Berger argues that we take our reality of everyday for granted, I agreed. In today’s society, it becomes clear that certain women belittle themselves for men. In today’s society, women don’t realize how grateful we are to be able to a complete true citizen. From sending nudes and selling their body, it puts a strong movement that was revolutionizing in the19th century to waste. Women become close minded, exactly as Berger and Luckmann argued, and only see for their individual society. Both of the GSM and EPM spend most of the time in China because the production is execut ed on that particular region. In the testing phase, the EPM and GSM take back the product to the Cupertino for obtaining the review and feedback from the executives (Teece 2012). Next, the product goes back to the China to apply to changes. The particular process can be repeated for enhancing the standard of the quality of the products. After the execution the testing phase of the product, the design department finalizes the particular design and started producing the models. In the final phase design, the wrapping of the invention is intended and tested on the latest prototypes. There are five different performance objectives including quality, speed, dependability, flexibility and cost. The design department of Apple has been following these particular performance objectives to deliver high quality products to the customers worldwide. Jonathan Ive, the chief design officer of the company believes that the organization is bound to uphold the quality of the design (Huang and Benyoucef 2013). The prime objective of the design team is to attract customer through attractive design and high quality performance. On the other hand, the quality indicates the durability of the product. For example, most of the products including I-Phone, IPad, MacBook have enhanced design that attracts a huge number of customers on the global platform (Polaine, Lvlie and Reason 2013). The speed performance objectives indicate the process where Apple can generate high sales in the marke t. Moreover, the particular process suggests how fast the organization can deliver its products to the customers. For example, the product design of the new I-Phone 6 and I-phone 6s facilitates the organization to attract all age customers in the market (Osterwalder et al. 2014). The improved design of the I-Phone influences a huge number of youth in the market to have the product experiences. The product development team of Apple has agreed with the fact that they would achieve 10%c increment on their yearly sales by maintain unique design of the products (Brown and Wyatt 2015). For example, there are several laptop brands available in the market such as Dell, Lenovo, and Asus etc. However, the striking design of Apple MacBook Pro has differentiated it from other available laptop brands in the market. On the contrary, the organization needs to focus on the designing cost of the product. Without maintaining affordable pricing system, the organization may not be able to target youth customers in the market (Teehan and Kandlikar 2013). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the product design of Apple plays a major role in the business. By bringing new design of the product into the market, Apple would be able to enhance its business opportunity in the global market. In this particular assignment, the process of the product design has been analyzed in an effective manner.
